Recent missions have pushed the boundaries of what rovers can do. Curiosity landed in the Gale Crater in 2012 and remains active as of 2025. Perseverance landed in February 2021 and carried the Ingenuity helicopter on its belly. China's Zhurong became the first non-American rover to operate on Mars in 2021. Zhurong landed in Utopia Planitia and was active for 347 sols. However, dust buildup on its solar panels prevented it from restarting after the Martian winter. 
Looking forward, many new ideas are being studied for future Mars exploration. The European Space Agency's Rosalind Franklin rover has faced delays and is now planned for at least 2028. India's ISRO has proposed a rover for its 2030 mission. Researchers are even investigating the Tumbleweed Rover, which is a spherical, wind-propelled vehicle.
