Scientists do not have a final answer yet. They have not found proof of life. But they know much about the planet's past. Long ago, Mars was very different. It had liquid water on its surface. This means it might have been a good place for tiny life.

Mars used to have a magnetic field. This field acted like a shield. It protected the air from the sun. Without this shield, the air was lost. The planet became very cold. Much of the water turned into ice. This ice is now under the ground.

Today, the surface is a hard place to live. It has harsh radiation from space. The soil also has salts that are toxic to life. Because of this, scientists look deep underground. We send robotic rovers to help.

These robots look for chemical biosignatures. These are signs left behind by life. They also look for organic compounds. These are the tiny building blocks of life. Some rovers even found methane gas. This gas could come from tiny life or from rocks.
