Scientists want to know how life began. They also look for life on other worlds. This field has three main parts.

First, they look for places that can support life. They study places like Mars or the moon Europa.

They look at extremophiles on Earth. These are tiny living things that live in harsh places. Some live in hot volcanoes. Others live in the deep, dark ocean.

Second, they search for biosignatures. These are signs that life was there or is there now. They look for organic compounds or tiny fossils.

Third, they study how life started on Earth. This helps them know what to look for in space. Scientists think life needs certain things. It likely needs liquid water and an energy source. Carbon is also very important. Carbon helps make the complex parts of life.
