The Gaia hypothesis is a big idea about how our planet works.

It suggests that living things and the non-living parts of Earth work together. This creates a self-regulating system that helps keep the planet healthy for life. This system is often called Gaia. This name comes from a Greek goddess who represented the Earth.

The theory says that life does not just live on Earth. Instead, life actively helps shape the air, the seas, and the ground. This keeps the environment stable even when things change.

One way this works is through a feedback loop. A feedback loop is a way that one change leads to another action. For example, the sun has become 25% to 30% hotter since life first began. To stay at a safe temperature, the Earth uses different tools. One idea is the CLAW hypothesis. This involves tiny ocean life called phytoplankton. These tiny organisms can help stabilize the temperature of the atmosphere.

Another example is the Daisyworld model. This model uses black and white daisies to show how plants can control heat. Black daisies absorb heat, while white daisies reflect it away.

James Lovelock first came up with this idea in the 1970s. He was a chemist who worked with a microbiologist named Lynn Margulis.

Together, they helped develop the theory. Lovelock even got a special award called the Wollaston Medal in 2006 for his work. Before they created this theory, other scientists like Vladimir Vernadsky had similar ideas. These earlier scientists looked at how elements move through the world. The Gaia hypothesis took these ideas and combined them into one big picture of a living planet.

There are many important facts about how Earth stays in balance. Ocean salinity, or the amount of salt in the water, stays at about 3.5%. This is vital because most cells cannot survive if the salt levels change too much. Some scientists think bacteria help create salt plains to keep this number steady. The atmosphere also changes over time. In the past, bacteria produced methane to help protect the Earth from ultraviolet light.

Today, we study how oxygen and gases stay at the right levels for us to breathe.

You can see these ideas in the world around you. When you look at the blue sky or the salty ocean, you are seeing a system in action. The Gaia hypothesis helps us understand how the air we breathe and the water we drink are connected to all living things. It shows that the Earth is not just a rock floating in space. It is a complex, moving system where everything plays a part. Even though some scientists still argue about the theory, it changed how we think about our home.
