Early Earth

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The early Earth was a very different place than it is today. Scientists often call this time Proto-Earth. This period lasted for the first one billion years of our history. It began about 4.55 billion years ago. The planet grew through a way called accretion. This means bits of dust and gas came together to form the world.

Things happened in steps to shape the planet. First, the Earth grew from the solar nebula. Then, a huge planet called Theia hit the Earth. Theia was about the size of Mars. This collision created magma oceans. It also helped form the core of our planet. Later, comets and meteorites hit the surface. This is called a late veneer bombardment. These space rocks may have brought water to the Earth.

Scientists use many tools to learn this history. They use radiometric dating to find old ages. This helps them know when rocks formed. One team of scientists shared new ideas in June 2023. They suggested Earth might have formed in only three million years. Most people think it took 50 to 100 million years. There is still a lot of debate in the science community.

We have found real clues from this time. The oldest known rock is a tiny mineral called zircon. It is 4.404 billion years old. You can find it in the Jack Hills of Western Australia. There are also old rocks in Greenland. These rocks are about 3.7 billion years old. Other terrains like the Isua greenstone belt are 3.8 billion years old. These numbers help us map out the past.

As the Earth cooled, the world changed again. Water vapor in the air turned into rain. This rain made a superocean that covered nearly everything. The lava planet became an ocean planet. Soon, the first life forms appeared in these waters. Life began to change the air and the ground. Today, we live on a world shaped by these ancient events.
