It began to form about 4.55 billion years ago. A way called accretion helped make the planet. This way used bits of dust and gas.

Early Earth was a very hot place. It was a lava planet. Big rocks hit the planet often. One huge rock hit the Earth. We call this rock Theia. Theia was the size of Mars. This hit helped make the Moon.

Space rocks like comets also hit Earth. These rocks may have brought water to the planet. Soon, the surface began to cool. Water vapor in the air turned into rain. This rain made a huge ocean. The ocean covered nearly all of the Earth.

Life began to live in these oceans. The oldest known rock is a mineral called zircon. It is from Western Australia. This tiny grain is 4.404 billion years old. Life appeared at least 3.5 billion years ago. It changed the air and the ground.
