He was a writer and a smart strategist. Some people believed he was a descendant of Sun Tzu. Sun Bin studied under a teacher named Guiguzi. He was so good at learning that he could recite "The Art of War." His teacher even said he was a role model for others.

Sun Bin's life was full of hard times. He had a fellow student named Pang Juan. They were once blood brothers, but Pang became very jealous. Pang was a general for the state of Wei. He told the King of Wei that Sun Bin was a traitor. As a punishment, the King had Sun Bin branded and crippled. This meant his kneecaps were removed. Sun Bin had to pretend to be insane to stay safe. Eventually, he escaped with help from diplomats from Qi.

After escaping, Sun Bin moved to the state of Qi. He worked with a general named Tian Ji.

Sun Bin was very clever during racing contests. He gave advice that helped Tian Ji win two out of three rounds. King Wei of Qi then made Sun Bin a chief advisor. Sun Bin could not lead troops on a horse because of his injury. Instead, he focused on making smart plans. He used a plan called "besieging Wei to rescue Zhao" to win.

Sun Bin won two very famous battles. The first was the Battle of Guiling in 354 BC. He used clever moves to defeat the army from Wei. The second was the Battle of Maling in 342 BC.

In this battle, his army used fewer cooking stoves to trick the enemy. The Wei army thought the Qi army was smaller than it really was. This led the Wei army into a trap in a narrow valley. During this fight, Pang Juan was killed. Some stories say Sun Bin carved a message on a tree to help the ambush.

Sun Bin wrote a book called "Sun Bin's Art of War." For a long time, people thought this book was lost forever. Many historians even doubted it existed at all. However, workers found pieces of it in 1972.

They found them on bamboo slips in a tomb in Linyi, Shandong. These slips showed that the book had 16 identified chapters. His book was different from Sun Tzu's book because it gave advice on attacking cities. Today, Sun Bin is still remembered in games and in temples.
