Sun Bin was a brilliant Chinese general and military strategist. He lived during the Warring States period of ancient Chinese history. This was a time when many different states fought for power. Sun Bin was also a writer of important military texts. Some people believed he was a descendant of the famous Sun Tzu. He was known for his deep understanding of how to plan for conflict. His life was marked by great intelligence and sudden, difficult changes.

Sun Bin began his education under a hermit named Guiguzi. He was an exceptional student of military strategy. He could recite the famous text, "The Art of War," from memory. Guiguzi even named Sun Bin as a role model for other students. During this time, Sun Bin became blood brothers with another student named Pang Juan. While Sun Bin focused on deep study, Pang Juan went on to become a general for the state of Wei. Pang Juan built a strong reputation through several early victories.

As Sun Bin grew in knowledge, a dangerous rivalry began to form. Pang Juan became very jealous of Sun Bin's talent. When Sun Bin joined the state of Wei, Pang Juan used this opportunity to act. He accused Sun Bin of treason to the King of Wei. The King sentenced Sun Bin to death. Pang Juan then convinced the King to change the sentence to a different punishment. Sun Bin was branded and had his kneecaps removed, which left him crippled. To survive, Sun Bin had to pretend he was insane. He eventually escaped the state of Wei with the help of diplomats from Qi.

After his escape, Sun Bin moved to the state of Qi. He became a guest and advisor to General Tian Ji. Sun Bin first gained attention during a racing competition. He gave Tian Ji advice that allowed him to win two out of three rounds. King Wei of Qi was impressed by this intelligence. The King appointed Sun Bin as a chief military advisor and the deputy to Tian Ji. Because of his injury, Sun Bin could not ride a horse. He declined to be a commander so that troop morale would not suffer. Instead, he focused entirely on strategy.

Sun Bin used clever tactics to protect his allies. In 354 BC, the Wei army attacked the state of Zhao. Sun Bin suggested a strategy called "besieging Wei to rescue Zhao." Instead of attacking Zhao directly, the Qi army attacked the Wei capital, Daliang. This forced the Wei army to withdraw from Zhao to defend their own home. This maneuver led to the Battle of Guiling, where the Qi army ambushed and defeated Wei. This was a major victory that changed the balance of power between the states.

In 342 BC, another conflict occurred when Wei attacked the state of Han. Sun Bin used a different kind of trickery during this campaign. His army feigned defeat during small fights. They also intentionally used fewer cooking stoves at night. The Wei army saw the shrinking number of stove marks and thought the Qi army was getting smaller. This mistake led the Wei army into a trap at the Battle of Maling. The battle took place in a narrow valley where the Qi army was waiting. During this battle, the Wei crown prince was captured and Pang Juan was killed.

The discovery of Sun Bin's actual writings is a major part of his history. For many years, historians were not sure if his book, "Sun Bin's Art of War," really existed. They only had references to it in other old texts. However, in 1972, something amazing happened. Archaeologists discovered the Yinqueshan Han Slips in a tomb in Linyi, Shandong. These were fragments of bamboo slips that contained parts of his book. Researchers have identified 16 chapters from these fragments. This discovery proved that his strategic ideas were real and documented.

Sun Bin's work was different from the earlier work of Sun Tzu. While Sun Tzu advised against attacking walled cities, Sun Bin provided advice for siege warfare. This change reflected how warfare had evolved during the later Warring States period. Today, Sun Bin remains a significant figure in Chinese culture. He is sometimes seen as a deity in temples. His life and his rivalry with Pang Juan continue to be told in films and video games. He remains a symbol of the power of strategy and intellect.
