In 73 CE, he joined a group led by General Dou Gu. He was sent to the remote Western Regions. This was a group of lands in Central Asia. During a meeting in Shanshan, his small group acted against some Xiongnu envoys. This event helped make the local King Guang agree to a peace pact. This was the start of his long career in the west.

Ban Chao spent over 30 years leading soldiers. He worked to protect the trade routes to the west. He often faced much larger groups of people. He was very skillful at using divisions among his opponents to win. By 74 CE, the kingdoms of Khotan and Kashgar were under Chinese rule. He also stopped rebellions in Kashgar and Yarkand. In 84 CE, he worked with the Kushan Empire to stop a rebellion.
