Ban Gu was a famous writer and leader in China. He lived during the Han dynasty. He is best known for his work on the Book of Han. This book is a very important history of China. It is the second of the 24 dynastic histories. Ban Gu also wrote a special kind of poetry called fu. These writings are part prose and part poetry. They are closely linked to the Han era.

Ban Gu spent much of his life writing history. He first worked on finishing a book started by his father. His father, Ban Biao, was a well-known historian. Ban Gu also wrote a long fu about his own life. This poem is famous for discussing big philosophical questions. He worked hard to record the stories of the past. His writing helped people understand how dynasties changed.

Ban Gu came from a very important family. His ancestors were successful traders of cattle and horses. They lived on the northwestern frontier of China. His twin brother, Ban Chao, was a famous military leader. Ban Chao explored Central Asia. His sister, Ban Zhao, was also a great scholar. She helped finish the Book of Han after Ban Gu died.

Life was often difficult for Ban Gu due to politics. Around AD 60, the Emperor became worried about his writing. The court feared how he would describe past leaders. Ban Gu was arrested and his family library was taken. His brother Ban Chao helped him get released. Later, Emperor Ming allowed him to work again. Ban Gu served in the imperial library for many years. He even held the rank of Marshal of the Black Warrior Gate.

Ban Gu died in prison in AD 92. He was 61 years old at the time. Even with these hard times, his work left a huge mark. He added a chapter about geography to his history book. This set a new trend for all future Chinese histories. His way of writing helped shape how people view history today. Many scholars still study his work to learn about the Han dynasty.
