His father was a powerful leader named Cao Cao. Cao Pi was the second son of Cao Cao. However, he was the eldest son born to Lady Bian. He grew up learning how to be a skilled swordsman. He studied martial arts from a man named Shi E. This teacher was part of the imperial guards. These guards were soldiers who protected the emperor.

Becoming the leader was not an easy job for Cao Pi. For many years, there were doubts about who would follow Cao Cao. Cao Cao had another son named Cao Zhi. Cao Zhi was a very talented poet and speaker. The two brothers had different groups of supporters. This created a quiet rivalry between them for a long time. In the year 217, Cao Cao finally named Cao Pi as his heir. This decision helped stabilize the family before Cao Cao died in 220. After his father passed away, Cao Pi became the King of Wei.

In the winter of 220, Cao Pi changed Chinese history forever. He asked the last ruler of the Han dynasty to step down. This ruler was known as Emperor Xian. Cao Pi followed a tradition of declining the throne three times first. Finally, he accepted the position on November 25, 220. This event marked the official end of the Han dynasty. It also marked the start of the Three Kingdoms period. Cao Pi moved the capital city to Luoyang to start his reign.

During his time as emperor, Cao Pi faced many hard battles. He fought against two other leaders named Liu Bei and Sun Quan. Liu Bei started the state of Shu Han in 221. Sun Quan ruled the area of Eastern Wu. Cao Pi tried to win more land through many large attacks. However, he did not make many big gains in these wars. He once said that the Yangtze River divided the north and the south. This river made it very hard to conquer the other lands.

Instead of just fighting, Cao Pi spent much time running his government. He focused on internal administration to keep his state strong. He used a system called the nine-rank system to find talented officials. This helped bring many smart people into his government. He also took away power from his own princes. He did this so they could not oppose him. Cao Pi was also a great scholar and poet. He wrote over one hundred articles on many different subjects.
