He was a leader who changed how the country worked. Before him, China was divided into many different states. These states were often at war with each other. He was born in 259 BC in a place called Handan. His personal name was Ying Zheng. He eventually became the king of the Qin state.

He rose to power through many years of fighting and winning. By 221 BC, he had conquered all the other warring states. This meant he had unified all of China under one rule.

He did not want to be called just a king. Instead, he created a brand new title for himself. He called himself the First Emperor. This title combined words that meant shining or splendid. It was a way to show his great power. This new title was used by leaders for many centuries.

As an emperor, he worked to make the whole land more organized. He worked with a minister named Li Si to make big changes. They wanted to make sure everyone used the same rules and systems. This helped the different parts of China work together more easily.

He also expanded the size of his lands. His generals led campaigns to the south and into Inner Asia. These moves added new lands to his growing empire. He wanted his realm to stay together for a very long time.

He was also famous for being a builder of huge things. He joined many old walls together to make the Great Wall of China.

He also built a massive system of new roads for the country. One of his biggest projects was his own city-sized tomb. This tomb is guarded by a huge group of life-sized clay soldiers. We call this the Terracotta Army.

These soldiers were made to guard him even after he died.

People have many different ideas about how he ruled. Some stories from long ago say he was a very strict leader. They say he was hard on scholars and even burned many books.
