Qin Shi Huang was the founder of the Qin dynasty. He was also the first emperor of China.

Before his reign, China was divided into many different warring states. He unified these lands under a single rule in 221 BC. This moment changed the course of Chinese history for thousands of years. His leadership marked the start of a new era that lasted until 1911.

The title of "emperor" was a new invention by this leader. Previously, rulers used the title of "king," which was used by the Shang and Zhou dynasties. To create his new title, he combined terms from Chinese mythology. He used "huang" from the mythical Three Sovereigns. He also used "di" from the legendary Five Emperors.

This title, known as huángdì, carried deep religious meaning. It was meant to give him immense prestige. He chose the regnal name "First Emperor" so his successors would follow a numerical order. This system only lasted as long as his immediate heir.

Qin Shi Huang was born in 259 BC in Handan. His personal name was Ying Zheng.

His father was King Zhuangxiang of Qin. Some ancient historical accounts, like the Shiji, suggest he was actually the son of a merchant named Lü Buwei. These stories claimed his mother, Lady Zhao, had an unusually long pregnancy. Many modern scholars doubt these claims. They believe these stories were added later to insult the emperor. In ancient China, being the child of a merchant was seen as a low social status. This may have been a way to damage his reputation.

His path to power was filled with many challenges. When his father died, Zheng became king at only 13 years old. During this time, Lü Buwei acted as a regent to help him rule. In 238 BC, a man named Lao Ai attempted a coup d'état. Lao Ai had become very close to the Queen Dowager and had two sons with her. He tried to seize power while the young king was traveling. The royal army defeated the rebels, and Lao Ai was killed. Shortly after, Lü Buwei committed suicide by drinking poisoned wine. By 235 BC, Ying Zheng assumed full control of the Qin state.

As emperor, he focused on standardization through major reforms. He worked closely with his minister, Li Si, to change the country. They wanted to fix the different practices used by the old warring states. This included making economic and political systems the same across the empire.

He also expanded the borders of his state significantly. His generals led campaigns into the south. These campaigns added the Yue lands of Hunan and Guangdong to the empire. They also conquered the Ordos Plateau from the nomadic Xiongnu people in Inner Asia.

Qin Shi Huang was also a massive builder of public works. He ordered the connection of various state walls into a single Great Wall of China. He also created a massive national road system to link his lands.

One of his most famous projects was his own city-sized mausoleum. This tomb is famously guarded by the Terracotta Army.

This is a collection of life-sized clay soldiers. They were built to protect him in the afterlife. Even his death in 210 BC occurred while he was on a tour of eastern China.

Historians have long debated the character of his rule. He is often described as a strict Legalist and a tyrant. Some traditional accounts say he burned many books and executed scholars to maintain control.

These views were heavily influenced by the Han dynasty that followed him. However, scholars since the mid-20th century have begun to question these assessments. They study his reforms to see his true impact. His reign had a paramount influence on all of China's subsequent history.
