He lived during a time of great change. He was born in 45 BC. His family was part of the powerful Wang clan. This family was related to the empresses of the Han dynasty. Even though his family was important, Wang Mang lived a simple life. He did not spend much money on fancy things. Instead, he spent his time studying hard. He was known as a kind and humble man. He took great care of his mother and his relatives. People respected him because he was very hardworking.

Wang Mang worked his way up through the government. He started with small jobs in the imperial palace. Later, he became a commander of the armed forces. This was a huge job with a lot of power. He helped organize the army and the guards. He also helped the emperor make big decisions. In 8 BC, he reached a very high position. He was only 37 years old at that time. He was very serious about his duties. He even helped people who were talented and capable. This helped change how people saw his whole family.

In AD 9, Wang Mang took the throne for himself. He started a new group of rulers called the Xin dynasty.

He wanted to create a fair and happy society. He used old ideas from books to guide him. One big change he made was ending slavery. He also started a program to share land with people. He wanted to make sure things were more equal. He even created new types of money for the people to use. Some people saw him as a man with a great vision. They thought he was trying to help everyone.

However, things did not stay peaceful for very long. Wang Mang's new rules caused many hard problems. Many people found the changes very difficult to follow. This led to large groups of people fighting back. These fights were called peasant rebellions. Two famous groups of rebels were the Lülin and the Red Eyebrows. The fighting became very widespread across the land. In AD 23, the capital city of Chang'an was taken over. The imperial palaces were also attacked during this time. These events brought a very sad end to his rule.

Wang Mang died during the battles in AD 23. After he was gone, the Han dynasty came back to power. First, a leader called the Gengshi Emperor took the throne. Later, the Guangwu Emperor became the leader in AD 25. He won after fighting the Red Eyebrows group. Wang Mang's time as emperor was very short. His life showed how much one person can change a country. His story is a big part of Chinese history. It helps us understand how different leaders try to change the world.
