Shang Yang was a very famous statesman in ancient China. He lived during the Warring States period. This was a time when many different lands fought for power. Shang Yang was born in a small state called Wey. His original family name was Gongsun. He was also known as Wei Yang. He eventually moved to the State of Qin to work for its leaders.

Shang Yang helped Qin grow into a very strong kingdom. He led two big sets of changes called reforms. The first set of changes happened around 356 BC. He used laws to make the government more organized. These laws were very strict and many in number. He believed in equality before the law. This meant the law should apply to everyone. This included both noble people and common people.

He also changed how the military and the economy worked. He made twenty different ranks for soldiers. Soldiers earned these ranks through success in battle. This helped the Qin army become very powerful. To help the people, he encouraged farming on new lands. He gave rewards to farmers who grew lots of food. He also made laws to help families grow larger. These changes helped Qin prepare to unify China.

Shang Yang's life was full of important events and dates. In 341 BC, he led the Qin army against the state of Wei. He won the war and gained 15 cities. Because of this, he became known as the lord of Shang. He also helped build the city of Xianyang. This city became the capital of Qin. He served as a chief minister for twenty years.

Even though he was successful, many people did not like him. The noble people felt his rules took away their power. After Duke Xiao died, the new ruler was angry with Shang Yang. The ruler ordered that Shang Yang and his family be killed. One story says he was executed by being torn apart by chariots. Even after his death, the leaders of Qin kept his many laws. His work helped shape how China was ruled for a long time.
