Wang Jian was a famous general from the State of Qin. He lived during a time called the Warring States period in China. This was a time when many different states fought to become the strongest. Wang Jian is remembered as one of the four greatest generals of his era. He was born in a place called Dongxiang. His son, Wang Ben, also became an important general for Qin.

Wang Jian was known for being a very smart leader. In 236 BC, he led an army to capture nine cities from the state of Zhao. Later, he helped conquer the state of Yan in 226 BC. His son, Wang Ben, also won many battles for Qin. These victories helped the State of Qin grow much larger. These leaders helped change how China was ruled.

One of his hardest jobs was fighting the state of Chu. The King of Qin, Ying Zheng, wanted to defeat Chu. First, the King sent a smaller army of 200,000 men. This army was defeated by 500,000 Chu troops at the Battle of Chengfu. After this loss, the King asked Wang Jian to lead. Wang Jian said he needed a huge force of 600,000 men.

Wang Jian used a clever trick to win the war. He stayed inside his forts to make the Chu army think he was not fighting. While he waited, he secretly trained his troops. Eventually, the Chu army grew tired and less ready. In 224 BC, Wang Jian attacked and won. By 223 BC, the state of Chu was conquered. This large war involved over 1,000,000 soldiers in total.

Wang Jian acted in a special way to stay safe. He asked the King for many expensive rewards. He did this to show he only wanted riches, not power. He wanted the King to trust him with his large army. After his many victories, Wang Jian retired because he grew old. His family, the Wang clan, continued to be important for many years.
