Wei Qing was born into a very poor family. His father was a low official who worked for a large estate. Because of his birth, Wei Qing was treated poorly by his father's family. He spent his time working as a lowly sheepherder. Eventually, he ran away to live with his mother. He became a stableboy at a large estate and took his mother's name, Wei.

His life changed when his sister, Wei Zifu, became a favorite of Emperor Wu. Wei Qing began working as a horseman for the Emperor's guards. He faced a dangerous moment when a powerful woman tried to have him killed. His friends saved him from this trouble. After this, the Emperor gave him many important jobs. The Emperor saw that Wei Qing was a brave leader. He was also a master of riding horses and using a bow.

Wei Qing led many successful military campaigns against the Xiongnu. In 129 BC, he led a raid on a place called Longcheng. This was the first major victory for the Han against the Xiongnu. In 127 BC, he led 40,000 cavalrymen to win a very fast battle. His soldiers were so successful that they returned home without losing any men. He was later named the Marquess of Changping.

During a big battle, a sandstorm hit the area. Wei Qing used the dust and darkness to surprise the enemy. His clever plan helped his army win a massive victory.
