The Han-Xiongnu Wars were a long series of battles. They lasted from 133 BC to 89 AD. These fights were between the Han Empire and the Xiongnu. The Han people were farmers who lived in one place. The Xiongnu were nomads who moved across the land.

Long ago, the Qin dynasty tried to stop the Xiongnu. They sent General Meng Tian to fight in 215 BC. He pushed the Xiongnu out of the Ordos region. The Qin also built long walls to protect their land. These walls were part of the famous Great Wall.

After the Qin dynasty fell, things changed quickly. The Xiongnu became a large group under a leader named Modu Chanyu. They moved back into the Ordos region. When the Han dynasty began in 202 BC, they faced many raids. Emperor Gaozu tried to fight, but he was trapped in an ambush. This was the Battle of Baideng.

To find peace, the Han tried to give gifts. They even used marriage to try to keep things calm. This did not stop the raids for long.

Emperor Wu changed how the Han Empire acted. He did not want to be passive anymore. In 133 BC, the Han tried an ambush at Mayi. It did not work because the Xiongnu leader saw the trap. This led to much more fighting.

Emperor Wu sent new generals to lead his armies. Wei Qing and Huo Qubing became very famous leaders. They led many big missions to win back land.

These generals were very successful in their work. Wei Qing took back the Ordos region in 127 BC. Huo Qubing pushed the Xiongnu out of the Qilian Mountains in 121 BC. The Han sent huge armies of over 100,000 men into Mongolia. By 119 BC, they pushed the Xiongnu north of the Gobi Desert.

This helped the Han Empire reach deep into Central Asia. They even set up a protectorate in 60 BC. This showed how much the Han power had grown.

Over many years, the Xiongnu grew weaker and weaker. They split into two different groups in 48 AD. The Southern Xiongnu joined the Han as helpers. The Northern Xiongnu kept fighting the Han.

In 89 AD, General Dou Xian led 50,000 riders to win a big battle. This caused the Northern Xiongnu to split even more. Eventually, they moved far west and disappeared from history. The Han Empire then began to worry about a new group called the Qiang.
