Modu Chanyu was a very important leader of the Xiongnu people. The Xiongnu lived on the vast Mongolian Plateau. Modu helped turn a group of tribes into a massive empire. He ruled as the Chanyu, which is a title for a leader, from 209 BCE to 174 BCE.

His empire grew to be one of the largest in its time. It stretched far across the land. The eastern border reached the Liao River. The western edge reached the Pamir Mountains. The northern border reached as far as Lake Baikal.

Modu became a leader through very tough and difficult choices. His father, Touman, did not want Modu to rule the Xiongnu. Touman sent Modu away to live with the Yuezhi people as a hostage. Modu escaped by stealing a very fast horse. When he returned home, he was seen as a hero. His father gave him a job leading 10,000 horsemen. Modu used this time to build a group of warriors who were perfectly loyal to him.

To make sure his men would follow any order, Modu used a special test. He invented a whistling arrow called a "鸣鏑" to signal his troops. He told his men they must shoot wherever the whistling arrow landed. To test their loyalty, he ordered them to shoot his favorite horse. He even ordered them to shoot one of his favorite wives. Anyone who did not shoot was killed. Finally, he ordered them to shoot his father, Touman. His men all obeyed, and Modu became the new Chanyu.

Once he was in power, Modu expanded his lands very quickly. He defeated the Donghu people by 208 BCE. This victory split those people into the Xianbei and Wuhuan tribes. He also defeated the Yuezhi in 203 BCE. These wins helped the Xiongnu control important trade paths. This gave the empire a lot of money. He even fought the Han dynasty in China. After a big battle called the Battle of Baideng, the Han leaders chose to make peace. They sent Modu gifts like silk, grain, and rice. This was called tribute.

Modu's life is still studied by people today. Some historians think his story is like old folk tales about heroes. These stories often feature a hero who is sent away and then returns to become a king. Some people even look for connections between his name and other famous leaders from much later times. After Modu died in 174 BCE, his son Jiyu took over. He was known as Laoshang Chanyu. The empire Modu built changed how people lived in East Asia for a long time.
