He ruled as the fourth Great Khan from 1251 to 1259. He was the first leader from the Toluid family line. His name means "eternal" in the Mongolian language. A shaman saw a great future for him in the stars. This helped him become one of the most important rulers in history. He worked hard to make the huge empire run more smoothly.

To rule a vast land, Möngke made many new rules. He wanted to stop leaders from spending too much money on themselves. He changed large gifts into regular salaries for the princes. He also made sure that merchants were treated fairly. He even paid off debts left by the previous ruler. This helped merchants feel safe doing business in his lands.

He used many different people to help him govern. Möngke hired officials from many different backgrounds. He worked with Muslim, Christian, and Uyghur leaders.

He even had a Christian chief scribe. This helped him manage lands that stretched from China to the Middle East. He also gave his brothers, Kublai and Hulagu, power over large areas. This helped keep the different parts of the empire connected.

One of his biggest jobs was counting everyone in the empire. Between 1252 and 1259, he held a massive census. This count went from North China all the way to Russia.
