He was the grandson of the famous Genghis Khan. Kublai was born into a royal family as the son of Tolui. When he was just nine years old, his grandfather performed a special ceremony for him. After a successful hunt, Genghis Khan smeared animal fat on Kublai's finger. The old leader said that Kublai's words were full of wisdom.

This early moment showed that people expected great things from him.

As he grew up, Kublai became very interested in Chinese culture. He studied many things like math, poetry, and art. He invited smart people to his home to teach him. A Buddhist monk named Haiyun became a close friend. Another advisor was a man named Liu Bingzhong, who was a painter and a mathematician.

Kublai also liked to hire people from many different lands. He wanted to balance the needs of the Mongols and the local people. This helped him learn how to lead a much larger group of people.

Kublai had to work hard to become the top leader. In 1260, he was chosen as the Great Khan by his supporters. However, his younger brother Ariq Böke also wanted to be the leader. This caused a civil war that lasted until 1264.

He was the first emperor from outside the Han people to rule all of China. His empire was huge and covered many places. It included most of China, Mongolia, and Korea. It also reached into parts of southern Siberia. By 1279, he had completed the conquest of the Song dynasty. He also ordered invasions into places like Japan and Vietnam.

Kublai Khan was a leader who changed how people lived. He fixed unfair tax laws so that farmers could return to their homes. He also strongly supported Buddhism and used Tibetan monks as healers.
