As he grew, Kublai developed a deep interest in Han culture. He studied subjects like mathematics, poetry, and calligraphy.

In 1271, Kublai officially established the Yuan dynasty. He claimed his rule followed the traditions of previous Chinese dynasties. By 1279, he had completed the conquest of the Song dynasty. This made him the first non-Han emperor to rule all of China proper. His empire was massive in size. It included most of present-day China, Mongolia, and Korea. He even converted 237 Daoist temples to Buddhism. These decisions helped shape the religious landscape of his empire. His support for Buddhism stood in contrast to other Mongol leaders who later turned to Islam.

Kublai Khan's rule connected many different parts of the world. He ordered military invasions into Japan, Vietnam, Burma, and Java. His empire was a center for trade and different ideas.
