He was a member of the Mongol royal family. He was the grandson of the famous leader Genghis Khan. Kublai also ruled as the Khagan of the Mongol Empire. This title meant he was the supreme leader of all Mongols. He ruled from 1260 until his death in 1294. His reign marked a major change in how the Mongol Empire functioned. He moved much of the focus toward ruling China.

Kublai's early life included important lessons in leadership and culture. When he was nine, Genghis Khan performed a traditional ceremony for him. After a hunt, the elder leader smeared animal fat on Kublai's finger. Genghis Khan told his followers to heed Kublai's wisdom.

Later, Kublai managed an estate in Hebei. At first, his officials were corrupt and taxed people too heavily. This caused many Han Chinese peasants to flee their homes. Kublai quickly ordered reforms to fix these laws. He brought in new officials to help stabilize the region. These efforts helped many people return to their lands.

As he grew, Kublai developed a deep interest in Han culture. He studied subjects like mathematics, poetry, and calligraphy.

He surrounded himself with many different types of advisors. He invited the Buddhist monk Haiyun to his court. Another advisor was Liu Bingzhong, who was a mathematician and a poet. Kublai also hired people of many different nationalities. He wanted to balance Mongol interests with Turkic and local interests. This diverse group of experts helped him manage a large empire.

Kublai's path to the throne involved a major conflict. After the death of his brother Möngke in 1259, a struggle for power began. His younger brother, Ariq Böke, was elected Great Khan by a council in Karakorum. However, Kublai held his own council and was proclaimed Great Khan in 1260.

This led to the Toluid Civil War. The fighting lasted until 1264 and caused the destruction of the capital, Karakorum. Kublai eventually won the war. This victory meant the Mongol Empire began to divide into different parts.

In 1271, Kublai officially established the Yuan dynasty. He claimed his rule followed the traditions of previous Chinese dynasties.

By 1279, he had completed the conquest of the Song dynasty. This made him the first non-Han emperor to rule all of China proper. His empire was massive in size. It included most of present-day China, Mongolia, and Korea. It also covered parts of southern Siberia and adjacent areas. He also held influence in the Middle East and Europe.

Kublai's religious policies were very influential. He strongly favored Buddhism over other faiths. He was particularly interested in Tibetan monks as healers.

He appointed the monk Drogön Chögyal Phagpa to his entourage. In 1258, Kublai held a large conference to settle religious disputes. He officially refuted the claims of Daoist leaders. He even converted 237 Daoist temples to Buddhism. These decisions helped shape the religious landscape of his empire. His support for Buddhism stood in contrast to other Mongol leaders who later turned to Islam.

Kublai Khan's rule connected many different parts of the world. He ordered military invasions into Japan, Vietnam, Burma, and Java. His empire was a center for trade and different ideas. He managed to rule a territory that included many different ethnic groups. His ability to use local officials helped him maintain control. He left a legacy of a unified China under Mongol leadership. His reign changed the political structure of East Asia for many years.
