Temür Khan was a very important leader of the Yuan dynasty in China. He was also known as the Emperor Chengzong. He ruled from May 1294 until February 1307. Temür was the grandson of the famous Kublai Khan. He was the third son of a prince named Zhenjin. Even though the Mongol Empire was split into different parts, Temür was still seen as a Great Khan. His way of ruling set a pattern for many years to come.

To become the leader, Temür had to win a special contest. His mother, Kökejin, suggested a competition between him and his brother Gammala. They had to show how well they knew the sayings of Genghis Khan. Temür won the contest and became the emperor. Before he ruled, he helped his grandfather during a rebellion. He also helped guard important areas like the Liao River. These early jobs helped prepare him for his big role.

Temür was known for being a kind and respectful ruler. He showed great respect to Confucian scholars and their ideas. He was a follower of Tibetan Buddhism like his grandfather. He also helped different religious groups, like the Taoists. In 1297, he even banned the sale of alcohol in Mongolia. He tried to help his people by lowering their taxes. For example, he let people in Khanbaliq skip taxes for one year. He also let Mongol commoners skip taxes for two years.

Life in the empire was not always easy for the government. Some officials were not honest, which is called corruption. This made it hard to run the empire well. Temür tried to fix this by giving officials more rice for their pay. He wanted to make sure they could live honestly. He also faced many hard jobs in other lands. He had to deal with rebellions in mountainous areas. He even sent soldiers to help in Burma to keep things stable.

Temür worked hard to keep peace with his neighbors. He decided not to attack Japan or the land of Đại Việt. Instead, he sent messengers to talk to them. He also received visitors from places like Siam and Cambodia. These leaders came to visit his capital to show respect. Sadly, Temür died in 1307 in the city of Khanbaliq. His only son, Deshou, had died just a year before him. Because of this, Temür did not have a male heir to take his place.
