Tolui was a major figure in the early Mongol Empire. He was the youngest son of the great leader Genghis Khan and his wife, Börte.

Although he was the youngest, he was a very important general. Many people believed he was the finest warrior among his four brothers. His brothers were named Jochi, Chagatai, and Ögedei. Tolui played a big part in how the Mongol lands grew. He helped his father lead many large armies across far places.

Tolui's life involved many difficult and serious tasks. He led soldiers during the first invasion of Jin China between 1211 and 1215. Later, he fought in the Khwarazmian Empire to expand Mongol control. In 1221, he was sent to a wealthy region called Khorasan. His job was to make sure no one fought against the Mongols there. He led an army of about 7,000 men to finish this hard job. He moved through cities like Merv and Nishapur to take control.

During his time in Khorasan, Tolui's actions caused great sadness. He attacked several large cities to make sure the region was under Mongol rule. In the city of Merv, he did not keep a promise to be fair to the people. In Nishapur, the fighting was very violent because the city had insulted the Mongols before.

Old stories from that time say millions of people died in these battles. Modern historians think those huge numbers might be too big. However, they agree that the wars caused a massive amount of harm.

Tolui's family was also very important to history. He married a woman named Sorghaghtani Beki. They had several sons, including Möngke, Kublai, and Hulagu. These sons grew up to be very powerful leaders themselves. Möngke and Kublai became khans, which were the great rulers of the empire. Hulagu even started his own land called the Ilkhanate. Because of his sons, Tolui's family stayed in power for a long time.

After Genghis Khan died in 1227, Tolui held a special role. He served as the regent, which means he looked after the empire for a while. He did this until his brother Ögedei became the new leader in 1229. Tolui died in late 1232, but the reasons are not clear. Some old records say he died during a ritual to save his brother. Other ideas say he died from sickness or something else. His wife, Sorghaghtani Beki, later helped their son Möngke take power in 1251.
