He was a very strong warrior. Many people thought he was the best fighter of all his brothers.

Tolui led many armies for his father. He fought in wars in China and in the Khwarazmian Empire. In the year 1221, he led a campaign in a place called Khorasan. This part of the world was very wealthy. During these wars, many people were treated very unfairly. Many people died in the cities Tolui attacked. While old stories say the numbers were huge, modern historians think they might be smaller. Still, the wars caused a lot of harm to the people living there.

After Genghis Khan died in 1227, Tolui helped run the empire. He was the regent, which means he looked after the land for a short time. He served until his brother Ögedei became the leader in 1229.
