It was the largest empire that touched many lands in a row. It started in a place called Mongolia in East Asia.

A man named Temüjin led many tribes to join together. In 1206, a group of leaders gave him a new title. They called him Genghis Khan.

He made new laws for his people. He also let people follow different religions. He helped trade grow between the East and the West. This helped people share new ideas and tools.

After Genghis Khan died, his sons and grandsons took over. The empire grew even more. It reached from the Pacific Ocean to Europe.

But the empire did not stay one single piece. Leaders fought over who should rule next. They also disagreed on how to live. Some wanted to live in cities. Others wanted to live as nomads on the plains. By the year 1294, the empire split into four parts. Each part was its own small empire.
