The Mongol Empire was a huge collection of lands. It was the largest empire in history where all the lands touched each other.

This empire began in the area we now call Mongolia in East Asia. At its highest point, it stretched from the Sea of Japan all the way to Eastern Europe. It even reached into Siberia and down toward the Indian subcontinent. This vast empire connected the East with the West and the Pacific with the Mediterranean. Because of this, people could share trade goods, new tools, and different ideas across much of the world.

To make this empire, many different groups had to come together.

Long ago, many nomadic tribes lived on the Mongolian steppe. They were often fighting or competing with each other. A leader named Temüjin worked to unite these tribes under his rule. In 1206, a council of leaders gave him the title Genghis Khan. He created new ways to organize his people into groups of ten, one hundred, and one thousand. He also made a set of laws called the Yassa to help people live together. These laws told people not to steal or fight among themselves.

Genghis Khan was a very important leader for his people.

He was born around the year 1162. His early life was quite hard because his family faced many dangers on the steppe. After he became the leader of the Mongols, he helped trade grow. He also gave people the freedom to follow any religion they chose. This was a big change for the world at that time. Even though he had his own beliefs, he welcomed many different ways of praying. He even asked a master from China to visit him in Afghanistan.

After Genghis Khan died in 1227, the empire kept growing.

His third son, Ögedei, became the next great leader. Under his rule, the Mongols moved into many new places like China and parts of Europe. They built a capital city called Karakorum in 1235. However, things began to change as the empire grew too large. The family members started to argue about who should be the next ruler. Some leaders wanted to live in cities, while others wanted to keep their nomadic way of life. These disagreements made it hard to stay as one single group.

By the year 1294, the big empire had split into four smaller parts.

These parts were called khanates. One was the Golden Horde in the northwest. Another was the Chagatai Khanate in Central Asia. A third was the Ilkhanate in Iran. The last one was the Yuan dynasty in China, which was based in Beijing.

Over many years, these smaller empires began to fall or change. The Yuan dynasty lost control of China in 1368. Learning about the Mongol Empire helps us see how much the world can change through leadership and movement.
