He used a decimal system to group his soldiers. Ten men formed an arban. Ten arbans made a zuun. Ten zuuns made a myangan. Finally, ten myangans made a tumen, which was 10,000 soldiers. This new way of organizing helped his army be very effective. It also helped unite the different tribes of Mongolia.

Genghis Khan became the leader of Mongolia in 1206. After that, his empire grew very fast through many conquests. In 1209, the Mongols took over the Western Xia. They conquered the Jin Empire between 1213 and 1214. By 1235, they had invaded Korea. Later, in 1258, Hulegu Khan captured the city of Baghdad. These victories allowed the Mongols to control many new trade routes. They also brought in new people like engineers and workers. This helped the Mongol Nation become more advanced.

At its biggest, the empire stretched from Busan to Budapest. It reached from Lithuania in the north to Vietnam in the south.

The Mongols made the Silk Road very safe for travelers. They even planted trees to provide shade for merchants. They also used stone pillars to mark the paths. Because the roads were safe, many new goods moved around. People in the West received silk, pepper, and gunpowder from the East. In return, Europeans sent silver, horses, and fine cloth to the East.

This era also changed how people shared ideas and did business. Travelers like Marco Polo used these well-maintained roads to reach China.

New ways of handling money, like bills of exchange, made travel easier. These allowed people to travel without carrying heavy metal coins. Science, math, and printing methods also moved between different lands. However, this period of stability eventually came to an end. The Mongol khanates began to break apart into different groups. At the same time, the Black Death spread along the trade routes.
