The first period began with the Han dynasty. The Han rulers made China strong. They also stopped threats from nomadic groups. A man named Zhang Qian helped start the Silk Road. This was a major route for trade. It let people share goods and ideas.

Later, the Tang dynasty brought another golden age. Its capital, Chang'an, was the largest city in the world. Many people from far away visited China. The Tang also had many tributary states. These were lands that worked with China.

The Ming dynasty also had a time of peace. A leader named Zheng He led seven sea trips. These trips showed China's power in many lands. Finally, the Qing dynasty ruled a very large empire.
