It was founded in 762 by a leader named al-Mansur. He wanted a new capital for the Abbasid dynasty. He chose a place near Persia that was safe from threats. Because of trade routes, the city became incredibly wealthy. It was the center of the Islamic Golden Age. Many smart people lived there to study science and math. They used new technology like paper to learn. People even called it the intellectual capital of the planet.

In the early 1200s, things began to change for the city. The Abbasid leaders slowly lost their power. Other groups, like the Buyids and Seljuks, moved into the area. Even so, Baghdad stayed very large. It had over a million people living there. By the time the Mongols arrived, the city was a famous place. However, the leaders in Baghdad were facing many problems. There were fights between different groups of people in the streets. The city's walls were also in bad shape from floods.

In 1251, a man named Möngke Khan became the Mongol leader. He sent his brother, Hulegu, to move west toward Persia. Hulegu was the grandson of Genghis Khan. He led a massive army of over 138,000 men.

It took his soldiers many years to reach the region. First, Hulegu had to fight a group called the Assassins. He defeated them in 1256. Hulegu wanted the ruler of Baghdad, al-Musta'sim, to help his army. The ruler refused to send soldiers to help. This choice led to a big conflict between the two sides.

The attack on Baghdad began in early 1258. The Mongol army surrounded the city from all sides. On 17 January 1258, the Mongols flooded a camp belonging to the city's soldiers. This helped the Mongols win a small battle. After that, they started a full siege of the city. The Mongols used huge machines to break the walls. They used stones and even burning materials to attack. By 4 February, the Mongol troops controlled the eastern wall. The city's defenders were left with only about 30,000 troops.

The siege ended in February 1258 when the city fell.

It was a very sad time for the people living there. Many people died during the fighting and the chaos. Hulegu estimated that around 200,000 people lost their lives. After the city was taken, the Mongols began to loot it. Eventually, Hulegu took control of the area. While the city was not as rich as before, it did grow again. It became part of a new land called the Ilkhanate. Baghdad stayed an important place for a long time after the war.
