Long before the Ilkhanate, the Mongols fought many wars in the area. In 1219, Genghis Khan started a war against the Anushtegin dynasty. Later, in 1231, an army sent by the Great Khan Ögedei crushed a leader named Jalal al-Din. By 1237, the Mongol Empire had taken control of most of Persia. They also took over places like Armenia and Georgia. This created the foundation for the Ilkhanate to grow.

A man named Hulegu started the Ilkhanate.

He was the son of Tolui and the grandson of Genghis Khan. In 1258, Hulegu proclaimed himself an Ilkhan. He was a very busy leader who ruled a wide area. He even brought Chinese scholars to help him learn about stars.

Together with an astronomer, he built a special place to study the sky. Hulegu died in 1265, and his son Abaqa became the next leader.

The Ilkhanate covered many places we know today.

Its main lands were in modern Iran, Azerbaijan, and Turkey. At its biggest, it reached into Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan. It even included parts of Pakistan and Tajikistan. The rulers were not originally from Iran, but they acted like they were. They tried to connect themselves to the old Sasanian Empire. This helped them show people they had the right to rule.

Things changed a lot for the people living there.

In 1295, a ruler named Ghazan became the Ilkhan. He and other leaders converted to the religion of Islam. This changed the culture of the land very much. However, life became hard in the 1330s when the Black Death arrived. This was a terrible sickness that hurt many people. The last Ilkhan, Abu Sa'id, died in 1335. After he died, the Ilkhanate broke apart into smaller pieces.
