It ruled many lands in places like modern-day Iran and Afghanistan. This empire was known for its Persian culture and Sunni Muslim faith. The people who ruled were of Turkic Mamluk origin. They controlled a huge area between 2.3 and 3.6 million square kilometers. This made them one of the most important states in the region.

The empire grew through careful choices by its leaders. They often had to balance power between other large groups. For example, they sometimes paid tribute to the Seljuk Empire or the Qara Khitai. This helped them stay safe while they grew their own lands. The empire was defended by a massive cavalry army. These soldiers were mostly Kipchak Turks who rode horses. This strong military helped the empire expand into many new territories.

His son, Muhammad II, led the empire to its biggest size. Muhammad II conquered the Western Kara-Khanid Khanate in 1213. He also defeated the Ghurid Empire in 1215.
