It began in the 13th century from the Mongol Empire. People also called it the Ulus of Jochi. This name honors Jochi, the eldest son of Genghis Khan.

Jochi was given lands near the Irtysh River. Later, the state became a separate and independent land. It is often called the Kipchak Khanate too. This name comes from the people living in the area. The Horde was a very important part of history.

The state grew through many steps and choices. First, the Mongol Empire was divided among the sons of Genghis Khan. Batu Khan became a very important leader for his family.

He led military groups far into the west. In 1235, Batu and a general named Subutai began an invasion. They moved through lands like Volga Bulgaria and many Russian areas. By 1241, they even reached as far as Hungary. Batu eventually chose to stay near the Volga River. He built a home there to stay safe and strong.

History shows the Horde had many different leaders. Batu Khan founded the Blue Horde and ruled for a while. After he died in 1255, his family stayed in power. They ruled for about one hundred years until 1359.

The military was very strong during the time of Özbeg Khan. He ruled from 1312 to 1341 and adopted Islam. This was a time when the Horde was very successful. However, things changed during the Great Troubles from 1359 to 1381. This was a period where leaders struggled to keep control.

There are many interesting facts about this great state. At its peak, the land reached from Siberia to Eastern Europe. It stretched from the Urals to the Danube River.

It also went from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea. The name "Golden" might come from golden tents used in war. It could also mean the great wealth of the leaders.

Some people even called the eastern part the Blue Horde. Others called the right wing the White Horde. These names helped people know which part was which.

The Golden Horde connects to many other parts of history. After Timur invaded in 1396, the Horde broke into smaller pieces. These smaller groups began to lose their power over time.

By 1480, Moscow was finally free from Mongol rule. This happened during a famous event called the Great Stand on the Ugra River.

Some small parts like the Crimean Khanate lasted much longer. They stayed around until the late 1700s. Studying the Horde helps us understand how large empires change. It shows how one big group can become many smaller ones.
