The group had many lands. It stretched from Siberia to parts of Europe. It also reached the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. Some people say the name came from gold tents. Other people say it came from the wealth of the leaders.

The Horde was very strong under Özbeg Khan. He became a leader in 1312. He also chose to follow Islam. Later, the group faced hard times. There were many fights for power. A leader named Timur invaded the lands in 1396. This caused the Horde to break into smaller parts. By the 15th century, it began to fall apart. New groups grew in these lands. The end of Mongol rule in Russia happened in 1480.
