Long ago, a big group lived on the grass lands.
They lived in many tents. Some say the tents were gold. This group had many leaders. They also had many rules.
The group was very strong. They moved across many lands. They lived near the sea. They also lived near mountains.
Later, the group began to change. It broke into smaller parts. This happened because of many fights.
New groups grew in those lands. The big group did not stay the same. It is a very old story.
The Golden Horde was a large group of people.

The Golden Horde was a huge and powerful state.

The state grew through many steps and choices. First, the Mongol Empire was divided among the sons of Genghis Khan. Batu Khan became a very important leader for his family.
History shows the Horde had many different leaders. Batu Khan founded the Blue Horde and ruled for a while. After he died in 1255, his family stayed in power. They ruled for about one hundred years until 1359.
There are many interesting facts about this great state. At its peak, the land reached from Siberia to Eastern Europe. It stretched from the Urals to the Danube River.
The Golden Horde connects to many other parts of history. After Timur invaded in 1396, the Horde broke into smaller pieces. These smaller groups began to lose their power over time.
The Golden Horde was a massive and influential state in the 13th and 14th centuries.

The state grew through strategic military expansion and careful settlement.
The Horde's political structure included different wings or regions.
There were several distinct eras of leadership and stability. After Batu's death in 1255, his dynasty flourished for one hundred years. The military reached its peak during the reign of Özbeg Khan from 1312 to 1341. During his rule, he adopted Islam. However, the late 1290s saw internal conflict caused by the intrigues of Nogai. Later, from 1359 to 1381, the state suffered through a period of instability called the Great Troubles. This era showed how difficult it was to maintain such a large empire.
At its greatest extent, the Golden Horde covered enormous amounts of land.
The decline of the Horde was caused by both internal and external forces.
The history of the Golden Horde connects to many modern political boundaries. The disintegration of the empire led to the rise of new Turkic khanates. These groups eventually faced expansion by the Russian state. The term "horde" even entered the English language through this period. It was originally used to describe a mobile camp or the seat of a khan. Today, historians study the Horde to understand how massive, multi-ethnic empires function. It remains a key chapter in the history of the Eurasian steppe.
