Two main groups of families fought for power. These were the Taibugids and the Shaybanids. Both families were related to Genghis Khan. The Taibugids often ruled the forest areas. The Shaybanids were more linked to the steppe lands.

Islam was the main religion for the leaders. They built grand mosques and tall walls. Many leaders studied in far away cities. Most other people still followed old beliefs like shamanism. The state was the northernmost Muslim state ever recorded.

In the late 1500s, things began to change. A leader named Yermak led a group of Cossacks. They fought the Khanate in 1582. A leader named Kuchum tried to fight back. He even killed Yermak in a battle. But the Russians kept coming. By 1598, Kuchum had to flee. This marked the end of the Khanate.
