Long ago, Russia wanted to find soft furs in Siberia. To get there, they needed to pass through new lands. A rich merchant family called the Stroganovs wanted to expand east. They hired Yermak to lead their soldiers.

In 1582, Yermak led an army of 840 men. His group included Russians, Tatars, Lithuanians, and Germans. They fought the Khanate of Sibir. This was a large empire led by Kuchum Khan. Yermak won a big battle at a place called Qashliq. This victory helped Russia take control of Siberia.

It is hard for historians to know everything about Yermak. Many old stories about him might not be true. Some books were written to make his life sound better. We do not even know what he truly looked like. Yermak died in 1585 during a raid by the Tatars. Even so, his travels changed the map of the world.
