Yermak Timofeyevich was a Cossack ataman who led the Russian conquest of Siberia. An ataman is a leader of a Cossack group. His expeditions during the reign of Tsar Ivan the Terrible changed the map of the world. By moving east of the Ural Mountains, he helped establish the Tsardom of Russia as an imperial power. This expansion was driven largely by the desire to control the lucrative fur trade.

The process of expansion began with the control of key entryways. The Tatar Khanate of Kazan served as the best path into Siberia. In 1552, Ivan the Terrible used a modernized army to topple this khanate. This victory allowed the Russian state to look further east. The Tsar granted the province of Perm to the Stroganov family. The Stroganovs were wealthy merchants who acted as a financial investment for the state. They were given permission to expand along the Tobol and Irtysh Rivers.

Conflict arose as the Stroganovs pushed into territories held by the Khanate of Sibir. This khanate was led by Kuchum Khan, a descendant of Chingis Khan. Kuchum Khan built alliances to stop the Stroganov expansion. In 1572, he launched a raid that killed nearly one hundred people. To defend their interests, the Stroganovs decided to move from defense to invasion. They recruited Cossack fighters to wage war on their behalf. The Cossacks elected Yermak as their leader, or captain.

Yermak's expedition began in 1582 with a diverse army of 840 men. This group included 540 of his own followers and 300 men supplied by the Stroganovs. The soldiers were not all Russian; they included Tatars, Lithuanians, and Germans. Their mission was to take possession of the land along the Tobol and Irtysh Rivers. They specifically wanted to open a southern route to Mangaseya to access furs. The journey was massive, potentially spanning five thousand miles toward the Bering Strait.

A major turning point occurred on October 26, 1582. Yermak and his soldiers fought a battle at Qashliq. This battle resulted in the overthrow of Kuchum Khan's Tatar empire. This event is often called the "conquest of Siberia." However, Yermak's success did not last forever. He remained in the region fighting the Tatars until 1584. During that year, a raid organized by Kuchum Khan ambushed his party. This ambush resulted in the death of Yermak and his men.

Historians face great difficulty when trying to find the truth about Yermak. Most of what we know comes from folklore and legends rather than reliable documents. There are no contemporary descriptions of his face. One source, the Remezov Chronicle, describes him as thick-set with a black beard and curly hair. However, this was written over a century later by someone who never met him. Other sources, like the Stroganov Chronicle, may be biased. The Stroganov family commissioned that text to make their own role seem larger.

Another important document is the Sinodnik, written by the archbishop of Tobolsk, Cyprian. He wrote this forty years after Yermak died. The Sinodnik was based on oral traditions and memories. It may have been influenced by Cyprian's desire to make Yermak a saint. Because these primary sources are often contradictory, Yermak's actual life remains obscure. Despite this, his impact on Siberian relations was profound. He helped connect the Russian state to the vast resources of the east.
