He led a group of soldiers into Siberia during the time of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. At that time, Russia wanted to find valuable furs in the east. To reach these lands, they needed to move past the Ural Mountains. The Stroganov family was a rich group of merchants who wanted to expand. They helped start the Russian move into these new areas. Yermak is now a hero in many Russian stories and myths.

His journey was a very long and difficult task. The goal was to reach a place called Mangaseya to get furs.

To get there, the group had to travel through many different lands. They used river paths to move through the wild country. The group had to cross many miles of new territory. This path helped open up a way for more people to follow. It was a huge trip that changed how people saw the land.

They wanted to protect their lands from the Tatar empire. This empire was led by a leader named Kuchum Khan. In 1582, Yermak set out with an army of 840 men. His soldiers included Russians, Tatars, Lithuanians, and Germans. On October 26, 1582, they fought a big battle at Qashliq. They won that battle and took control of the area.

It is hard for historians to know the true facts about Yermak. Many of the old books about him might be wrong or biased. For example, the Stroganov Chronicle was written by the family itself. They might have made their own role sound much bigger than it was. Another book, the Sinodnik, was written forty years after he died. That book was based on old stories and memories. Because of this, we do not even know what Yermak really looked like. Some old accounts say he had a black beard and curly hair.

Even though much is unknown, Yermak's life had a huge impact. His travels helped make Russia a very strong power in the east. He helped the country grow far beyond the Ural Mountains. Yermak died in 1585 during a raid by the Tatars. Even after his death, his name stayed in many folk songs. His actions helped connect different parts of the world together. Today, people still study his life to understand how Siberia changed. His story shows how one leader can change a whole region.
