Life in the khanate was busy and organized. The Khan was the main leader of the land. He did not rule alone. He worked with a group of advisors called a Diwan. This group helped him make big decisions. The people were divided into different groups. Some were nobles with high ranks. Others were commoners who lived on state lands. There were also many farmers and workers. The state was divided into five directions called darughas. These areas helped the Khan manage the large territory.

History shows that the khanate had many leaders. Ulugh Muhammad was the founder of the state. He took the throne around 1437 or 1438. After that, the khanate faced many struggles. The khans changed very often. In 115 years, there were 19 different khans. Some leaders ruled more than once. The people and the nobles often chose the leaders. This caused a lot of fighting for power. This made the government go through many hard times.

The khanate came to an end because of war. The Tsardom of Russia wanted to control the land. In 1552, Ivan the Terrible led a large force. They used a fortress called Sviyazhsk to start their attack. The Russians laid a siege on the city of Kazan. This siege lasted for two months. On October 3, 1552, the Russian army entered the city. This event ended the rule of the khans. After the war, the land became part of Russia. The old way of life changed for the Tatar people.
