The Russo-Kazan Wars were a series of conflicts between two powers. One was the Grand Principality of Moscow, which later became Russia. The other was the Khanate of Kazan, a land ruled by a leader called a khan. These wars happened between 1437 and 1556. Most of the fighting was not about taking land. Instead, it was about who would sit on the throne in Kazan. Moscow often stepped in to help its ally, the Crimean Khanate. They wanted to make sure a friendly leader ruled in Kazan.

Warfare in this time followed specific patterns. When the Tatars from Kazan attacked, they often hit Nizhny Novgorod first. From there, they could move toward places like Murom or Ryazan. Sometimes they even got close to Moscow. When the Russians attacked, they used two different ways. They would send one army down the Volga River. They would also send another army over the land. This helped them move large groups of people through the difficult terrain.

History shows that these wars were often tied to family struggles. In the 1430s, the Khanate of Kazan broke away from the Golden Horde. This was a large group of lands that once ruled the area. During the 1440s, things became very difficult for Moscow. In 1445, the khan Ulugh Muhammad took the fortress of Nizhny Novgorod. In a battle at Suzdal, the Russians lost and captured their leader, Vasily II. It took four months and a large ransom to free him.

Many famous leaders shaped these many years of fighting. Ivan III was a powerful prince of Moscow. In 1487, his troops successfully took the city of Kazan. He even called himself the "Lord of Volga Bulgaria" after this victory. Later, Vasily III also fought to control the region. In 1524, he sent a huge army of 150,000 men toward Kazan. Even though the army faced hunger, they managed to reach the city. These leaders used their military strength to change who held power.

These wars eventually changed the map of the world. For a long time, the two sides just fought over leaders. This changed when Ivan the Terrible took power. In 1552, he led a massive siege to take Kazan for himself. This was a different kind of war because he wanted to annex the land. This meant he wanted Kazan to become part of his own territory. After a rebellion lasted until 1556, the era of these wars finally came to an end.
