Dmitry became a leader when he was only nine years old. This happened because he was an orphan. A man named Metropolitan Aleksey helped lead during this time. Dmitry later became the Grand Prince of Vladimir in 1363. He was a central figure in the Russian Middle Ages. Many people today see him as a national hero.

During his rule, Dmitry worked to make Moscow much stronger. He began building the Moscow Kremlin, which is a large fortress. This building was finished in 1367. The strong walls helped the city during the Lithuanian-Muscovite War. This war lasted from 1368 to 1372. After the war, a peace deal called the Treaty of Lyubutsk was made. Dmitry also settled a fight with Mikhail II of Tver. By the end of his reign, his land was twice as large. He was a very busy ruler.

One of the most famous parts of his life was his struggle with the Golden Horde. The Golden Horde was a group of Mongol rulers. They had a lot of power in Russia for a long time. However, the Horde became weak because of internal fights. Dmitry saw this as a chance to stand up for his people. In 1378, his forces defeated a Mongol army at the Vozha River. This was a very important victory for him. It showed that the Mongol rule was starting to crumble.

In 1380, a much larger battle took place at the Kulikovo field. A Mongol general named Mamai led this large force. Before the fight, a holy man named Sergius of Radonezh blessed Dmitry. Sergius even sent two warrior monks to help the troops. The battle began with a single fight between two champions. Alexander Peresvet fought for the Russians against Temir-murza. Both champions died during their first run. Dmitry's army won the battle. This is why he is called "Donskoy," which means "of the Don" River.

Dmitry had a very large family with his wife, Eudoxia. They had at least twelve children together. His son, Vasily I, became the next leader of Moscow. Dmitry died in 1389. He was the first leader to give his titles to his son without asking the Khan. The Orthodox Church honors him as a saint today. His feast day is on 19 May. His life changed how the land was ruled forever.
