Feodor was the last ruler of the Rurik dynasty. After Feodor died in 1598, Boris became the tsar himself. He was elected by a large group called the Zemsky Sobor. He was officially crowned on September 1, 1598.

Boris worked hard to improve his country in many ways. He wanted Russia to learn from other lands. He was the first tsar to bring in many foreign teachers. He also sent young Russians to study in other countries.

Boris built many new towns and strong fortresses. These included places like Samara, Saratov, and Voronezh. He even helped people settle in Siberia. One of these new settlements was called Tobolsk.

These towns helped keep the borders of Russia safe.

Some parts of his rule were very difficult. In 1597, Boris made a new law about land. This law stopped peasants from moving to different lands. This rule helped the government collect money. However, it also led to a hard way of life called serfdom. Later, a very bad famine happened from 1601 to 1603. This meant there was not enough food for everyone. Hundreds of thousands of people died during this time.

Boris tried to help, but the famine was very hard to stop.

Many people became angry during these hard years. Some people thought a man was a fake prince. This man claimed to be Dmitry, a prince who had died years before. This man was called the False Dmitry. He came from Poland with a large group of soldiers.

Many people in the south joined him. This caused a lot of fighting and trouble for Boris. It made the government feel very weak and unstable.

Boris Godunov's life shows how much one person can change a land. He moved Russia toward new ideas and better education. He also faced huge problems like hunger and war. His death led to a very confusing time called the Time of Troubles.
