Rurik was a famous leader from a group called the Varangians. Many people call him the first king of Russia. He was a chieftain, which is a leader of a tribe. Some historians think he was a real person. Other historians think he might be a legend from old stories.

This leader helped start a very long line of rulers. This group of rulers is known as the Rurik dynasty. They ruled many lands for hundreds of years. Their rule lasted until the year 1598.

In the year 862, things were not peaceful in the land. Different tribes like the Chuds and the Slovenes were fighting. They wanted to govern themselves without outside help. But the fighting made it hard to live in peace. The tribes decided to invite Rurik to come and lead them. They hoped he would bring order to their lands.

Rurik did not come alone to help. He brought his two brothers, Sineus and Truvor. They also brought a large group of followers with them.

Each brother went to a different place to rule. Sineus went to Beloozero to set up his home. Truvor went to the town of Izborsk. Soon after, both brothers passed away. Rurik then took control of all those lands. This helped him grow his own territory in northern Russia.

Some old books say he first lived in Ladoga. Other books say he settled in a place called Novgorod. Novgorod was a fort built near the Volkhov River. He stayed there until he died in the 870s.

Before Rurik died, he had to make big choices. He had a young son named Igor. Because Igor was so small, Rurik could not give him the land yet. Rurik asked his relative, a man named Oleg, to help. Oleg became the regent, which means he ruled for the young son.

Oleg eventually moved the capital to the city of Kiev. This helped create a large state called Kievan Rus'. This state lasted until the Mongol invasion in 1240.

Learning about Rurik helps us understand how countries start. The Rurik dynasty ruled until the Tsardom of Russia was formed. Even after the dynasty ended, many noble families claimed they were related to him. Some studies even link his family to kings in Poland.

It is interesting to see how one leader can change history. Whether he was real or a legend, his name is still famous. He is a key part of many old stories from the past.
