Long ago, a leader named Rurik arrived in a new land. He was a Varangian chieftain. Many people believe the Varangians came from Scandinavia. Some think the name Rus means "the men who row."

Local tribes were fighting with each other. They decided to invite Rurik to lead them. They wanted him to bring order. Rurik came with his two brothers, Sineus and Truvor.

Rurik settled in a place called Novgorod. Some old books say he first lived in Ladoga. He stayed in power until he died in the 870s. Before he died, he gave his land to a relative named Oleg.

Oleg took care of Rurik's young son, Igor. Oleg later moved the capital to Kiev. This helped start the state of Kievan Rus'. Rurik's family ruled for a very long time. This ruling family is called the Rurik dynasty. They ruled until the year 1598. Some historians think Rurik might be a legend. They are not sure if he was a real person.
