Most scholars believe they were Norsemen from places like Sweden. They arrived in Eastern Europe between the 8th and 11th centuries. They traveled along big river routes. These rivers connected the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea.

They built important towns. One was Ladoga, founded in the mid-8th century. Another was Rurikovo Gorodische, founded in the mid-9th century. These towns sat near the Volkhov River. The Norsemen called this area Gardar.

As time passed, the Rus people changed. They lived near Finnic and Slavic tribes. Over many years, they mixed with these local people. They began to speak a common language. This group became the Kievan Rus.

This history is very important today. The name Rus is the root for Russia and Belarus. It also connects to the history of Ukraine. Even today, we see their influence in many place names.
