The Rus were a group of people in early medieval Eastern Europe.

Most scholars believe they were originally Norsemen from present-day Sweden. They settled along river routes between the Baltic and the Black Seas. These people acted as both traders and raiders during the 8th to 11th centuries AD. Their movement helped shape the foundation of many modern nations. Their history is central to the formation of states in Eastern Europe. Today, their name is the root for the names of Russia and Belarus.

The Rus relied on complex river systems to expand their influence. They traveled along paths connecting the Baltic Sea to the Black and Caspian Seas. They likely called their territory Gardar. From this area, the Rus moved eastward toward Finnic tribes. They also moved southward toward the Slavic people. This movement eventually led to the creation of a state called Garðaríki. This state is also known as Kievan Rus. This expansion allowed them to control important trade and power.

Two main settlements served as the original centers for the Rus. The first was Ladoga, which the Norsemen called Aldeigja. It was founded in the mid-8th century. The second was Rurikovo Gorodische, known as Holmr. It was founded in the mid-9th century. These two sites sat at opposite ends of the Volkhov River. The river flows between Lake Ilmen and Lake Ladoga. These locations acted as early hubs for manufacturing and trade.

As the Rus settled, they began a process of cultural assimilation. This means different groups of people mixed together over time. The Norsemen lived alongside local Finnic and Slavic tribes. Eventually, these groups began to speak a common language. The ruling Norsemen remained part of an elite class. They continued to speak Old Norse until the second half of the 11th century. In some northern rural areas, Norse culture lasted even longer. Some traces of this culture remained until the 14th or 15th centuries.

Archaeologists find many clues about Rus culture in the ground. They find metal ornaments that show Scandinavian styles. These include weapons and decorated parts for horse bridles. Many of these objects are jewelry used by women.

Runic inscriptions also provide historical evidence. Some of these stones were left by Varangians on their long journeys. These stones tell stories of specific warriors and travelers. They prove that the Rus traveled far from their original homes. They reached as far as Greece and Italy.

The Rus also formed strong political and family ties with other leaders. For example, the Swedish king Anund Jakob wanted to help Yaroslav the Wise. Yaroslav was the Grand Prince of Kiev. A Viking named Ingvar the Far-Travelled also brought 3,000 men to assist Yaroslav. Many royal families connected through marriage. Yaroslav the Wise married Ingegerd Olofsdotter, a daughter of the Swedish king.

These connections helped blend the different cultures of the north and south.

Understanding the Rus helps explain the history of many modern countries. Their legacy is found in the national histories of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus. The name Rus is still used in many place names today. You can find it in the Novgorod and Pskov districts. Some scholars have debated their origins for a long time. This led to different views, such as the "anti-Normanist" perspective. However, the connection between the Rus and the Scandinavian people remains a major part of the historical record.
