The Rus were a group of people in early medieval Eastern Europe.

Most scholars believe they were originally Norsemen from places like present-day Sweden. They lived and ruled along river paths between the Baltic and Black Seas. These people were important traders and raiders. They moved through many different lands to find new opportunities. Their history helps us understand how many modern nations began.

Their way of life relied on moving through river systems. They used these paths to travel between large bodies of water. The Norsemen likely called their territory Gardar. They moved from the Baltic Sea toward the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. This allowed them to trade goods across very long distances. They often lived near Finnic and Slavic tribes along these routes. This movement helped them spread their influence across the region.

The Rus established important centers very early on. One major settlement was Ladoga, which was founded in the mid-8th century. Another center was Rurikovo Gorodische, founded in the mid-9th century. These two places were at opposite ends of the Volkhov River. The river runs between Lake Ilmen and Lake Ladoga. These towns served as the original heart of the Rus people. They helped the group grow into a larger state.

Many facts tell us about their culture and connections. The Rus moved eastward toward Finnic tribes and southward toward the Slavs. Over time, the Norsemen and local tribes mixed together. They eventually spoke a common language and became the Kievan Rus. This new group formed a state called Garðaríki. Even the elite spoke Old Norse until the late 11th century. In some northern areas, Norse culture lasted even longer.

The legacy of the Rus is still very important today. Their name is the root for the names of Russia and Belarus. Their history is also a key part of Ukraine. You can still find the name Rus in many place names. This includes areas in the Novgorod and Pskov districts. Their story shows how different groups of people can join together. This joining helped shape the map of Eastern Europe we see now.
