The Varangian Guard was a group of elite soldiers in the Byzantine Empire. They served as personal bodyguards for the emperors who ruled from Constantinople.

These fighters were very important to the safety of the leaders. The emperors chose them because they were from far away. This meant the guards had no local political ties. They would not join local groups to start a revolt. Instead, they remained loyal to the emperor they served.

Most of these warriors came from Northern Europe. For the first hundred years, they were mainly Norsemen from Scandinavia. This included men from Sweden, Denmark, and Norway.

Later, the group changed as new people joined. After the Normans invaded England, many Anglo-Saxons arrived to serve. Some sources say as many as 5,000 people arrived in 235 ships. These new soldiers were often called "Anglo-Varangians." They were famous for carrying a large weapon called a Dane axe.

The Guard became a formal unit in the year 988. Emperor Basil II officially formed them during this time. He made this choice after Vladimir I of Kiev sent 6,000 men to help. This happened after the Christianization of the Kievan Rus'.

Vladimir sent these warriors as part of a military agreement. In exchange, Basil II gave his sister, Anna, to marry Vladimir. This helped bring the Christian faith to the Rus' people. The Guard grew from these early warriors to become a permanent force.

The Varangians did much more than just stand guard. They were often used in the most important parts of a battle. In the year 1018, they helped fight a revolt in Italy. They also fought in Sicily against the Normans. One very famous member of the Guard was Harald Hardrada. He was a warrior who later became the King of Norway.

This group of soldiers lasted for hundreds of years. They stayed active until at least the middle of the 14th century. By the late 13th century, many of them had blended in with the local Greek people. However, people still identified as Varangians in Constantinople as late as the year 1400. Their story shows how people from different lands can come together to serve a single leader. They left a lasting mark on the history of the Byzantine Empire.
